Grade updates & extra credit opps

admin 28 Apr 2007 | : Extra Credit

Hi folks,

Just a reminder to please let me know if there’s any problems with the grade update sheets I passed out to each of you in class last week….. if there’s something you turned in that I didn’t account for, now is the time to let me know.

Also, if you are less than thrilled with your grades so far, there is still plenty of time to do extra credit.  In the right column ——> under “Related Stuff” are links to Feminista magazine and Women’s eNews   ….both have lots of news item you can choose from….and write up a one-page single spaced analysis that includes a brief summary of the issue, why its related to the class, and any insight or questions you have on the subject.  Remember, with any extra credit, the burden is on you to show why the article or movie or event you’ve chosen is significant and related to issues we’ve covered in class.  So if you’re gonna do extra credit, do it right…..no phoning it in….

Research papers

admin 18 Apr 2007 | : Uncategorized

Quick notes on finding a thesis:

  • Topic is a general area of interest: domestic violence, gay marriage, parenting, women in policing
  • Research question is some issue or angle on that area of interest: why is there resistance to gay marriage? does a woman policeofficer do her job differently than a man? are children of straight parents really better off?
  • Research thesis comes after you’ve done your reading and research: Women police officers will transform police work. Gay parents face the same problems as straight parents…

Be open to change!

Your thesis must be arguable, debatable.

Be complex – avoid easy answers, engage contradictions.

Anticipate counter-arguments.
